Soul Patrol with Dave K

In this episode of the Soul Patrol, we’re looking at yacht rock through a soul and R&B lens, inspired by HBO’s Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary. The film traces a style created by interconnected Los Angeles writers, producers and session musicians in the late 1970s and early ’80s. We’ll follow those connections through Brenda Russell, George Benson, Michael Jackson, the Pointer Sisters and others — with a few essential stops among the artists most closely identified with yacht rock.

George Clinton celebrated his 85th birthday on July 22nd and in this episode of the Soul Patrol we are extending the celebration. We will follow his story chronologically — from the Parliaments’ doo-wop beginnings, through Funkadelic and Parliament at their height, and into the solo records that carried P-Funk into the hip-hop era. Deep cuts, essential collaborators and one or two undeniable classics are all ahead.

Dayton, Ohio is known as The Land of Funk because an extraordinary number of major funk bands emerged from one mid-sized Midwestern city during the 1970s and early ’80s. The Ohio Players, Slave, Zapp, Lakeside, Sun, Faze-O and others built a sound powered by tight rhythm sections, horns, synthesizers and serious stagecraft. This time on The Soul Patrol, we dig beyond the biggest hits and into the deep grooves of Dayton funk.
